High Definition (HDTV)
To qualify for the classification of HDTV, content must meet the following minimum requirements:
- 16:9 aspect ratio
- 720 or 1080 lines of resolution
- Interlaced or progressive scan format
The main distinguishing characteristic of HDTV is the exclusive use of the 16:9 aspect ratio to deliver a widescreen viewing experience that more closely resembles the human field of vision. The remaining six of the 18 ATSC standards are classified as HDTV and the most commonly used are 720p and 1080i.
HDTV formats contain the highest quality digital broadcasting formats and requires the most bandwidth in delivering its combination of up to ten times the visual information and high-quality digital surround sound (Dolby Digital 5.1).
